Book Reviews

A Romance Review / Nan Doporto - Five Stars
Oooh! Love that cover! George Haber is a hunk pro cover model and really makes this LionHearted cover sizzle.

This is a Five Star, nay a 6 Star book! Am I prejudiced? Yes, LionHearted has never published a bad book. Here is a writer that knows how to tell a story that will grab and keep your interest. Charades is a tigntly written, tension filled, sensous tale of romantic suspense. This fast-paced global jaunt is filled with danger and romance. Ann Logan is a fine new author that readers will love. She gives us a hero to die for, and a heroine to cheer on.

From the first page, you are hooked. The gimmick is a blind date with pay, but that is only from the heroine's point of view. The hero's agenda is the theme of the plot. Woo the nerdy miss, make her fall in love with him and bring her to Germany, where she will meet her grandfather, a former Nazi who has some hidden loot to account for. Of course there are twists like - who is trying to kill the heroine - or is it the hero? And who else is after the money?

Our heroine, Mercy Fuentes, is a nerdy repressed recluse, and though Wulf Rheinhart, the hero, pretends to be a retiring workaholic and assumes a German identity, he is quite the opposite. The secondary characters are interesting and lively as well and keep you guessing as to who all the characters really are.

An intercontinental romp from Texas to Germany, and then to Mexico makes for an interesting read. Great internal and exciting external tension will keep you glued to the page.

The Word On Romance / Jan Crow
Mercy Fuentes, against her better judgment but in repayment of several debts, lets her friend, Hazel Pendergast, arrange for a blind date for her. There's one exception to this blind date though. It will last several days, not just a few hours; and this "blind date" brings a price tag, $750.00 a day for seven days, it is quite an enticement to go through with the blind date even if he is a dog.

Wulf Rheinhart is a very persuasive man. He wants to close on a deal for his company, Steiger Oil. But, the deal requires he spend a week with Red and Dorie Ryder who choose only to do business with "settled", married or nearly married persons. What neither he nor Hazel tells Mercy is that this is a front for an expedition to find money that's been missing for years. Wulf convinces Mercy that he's madly in love with her and they take off for a spur of the moment trip to Germany to meet his parents. Yet there is something about Wulf that Mercy can't quite put her finger on. But a meeting with the parents is not what Mercy finds. Met with guns, kidnappings, spies, murderers, and Nazi generals, Mercy learns nothing is as she thought it was, including Wulf. Crossing the continents several times within the week, they are pursued and nearly killed all over some missing money, actually a lot of missing money. The total bank account of $909,589,634.13 is very much in demand by everyone involved.

Author Ann Logan brings an interesting crew of characters to her story and mixes history and cultural diversity in as well. The story takes place from Texas to Germany to Mexico giving glimpses of each country's diverse sites and terrains. However, there are often so many characters and quick setting changes that the reader has to pay careful attention to keep up with all the action. The revelation of family secrets brings new characters to the story and new motives for the action that speeds the story along.

Charades is a good book that reminds me of a weekend thriller movie. The reader should grab a soda, sit back, hang on and enjoy the ride.

Ann Logan
Ann Logan’s background includes working for Naval Investigative Services. Although NIS spent a lot of time scrounging around for acts of espionage or sabotage, they still had to take care of day to day business. This took the form of thefts, burglary, misappropriation of government funds or crimes of larger magnitude such as rape, assault or murder. Needless to say, the FBI always grabbed up the really exciting things first.

She took the statements of all the usual suspects, real or imagined, including the periodic homophobic round-ups that the military says it doesn’t do any more. In the five years she worked there, she saw more miscreants than she ever hoped to see in her life—and that was just the agents.

Her experience with a bloated bureaucratic organization stood her in good stead for her next five year rite of passage as a clinical psychologist. It amazed her how many crazy people were at state mental hospitals besides the administration.

Ann loves to travel, and her numerous trips to Europe, Great Britain and Mexico have given her more material than she will ever be able to use.

In between writing she runs a property management company she founded. Her husband of 30 plus years is a criminal defense attorney. They have two children and an ever-changing number of animals.

She loves to hear from readers and can be emailed at AnnLogan46@aol.com.
